About Lao Midwife Fund
There is no denying that women around the world, especially those within low-resource countries are found to bear a monumental amount of health burden. Despite considerable progress over the past two decades, especially with the World Health Organization's (WHO) Millennium Development Goals (MDGs); societies are still failing women at key moments in their lives. These failures are most acute in poor countries, and among the poorest women. Recent progress in maternal health has not been equally felt, with too many girls and women still unable to reach their full potential because of persistent health, social and gender inequalities and health system inadequacies. Not surprisingly, the highest burden of morbidity and mortality are among the reproductive years. Maternal health is influenced and evolving constantly by societal factors, the political environment, physical environmental factors and changing demographics; creating a very complex system to navigate to ensure that all women are linked to routine and emergency care. No women should be left behind.
During the first fundraising period and the months proceeding the ICM conference, our Co-founder, Bounmy Inthavong spent a lot more time learning about the disproportionate burden of health of many Lao women and children face daily. She realized we cannot stop at merely getting one Lao midwife to one conference but to actively engage in the conversation to reduce the health burden of women and children in Lao PDR! Midwifery is still very much in its infancy in Lao PDR. After a 29 year hiatus, midwifery only became a focus of attention once more in 2009 as an avenue to help reduce the high maternal and infant mortality rates. Through the support of various agencies and stakeholders, the government of Lao PDR began its transition to re-established midwifery education and services. The Lao Midwife Fund hopes to support those driving the change in Lao PDR to improve maternal and child health by funding projects that advance midwifery through research, public education, advocacy, and health equity initiatives.
